The Worship Committee of St. John's session is responsible for working with the pastor to support the worship services and programs of the church related to worship. These responsibilities include the music program, Communion, and providing child care in the nursery during the Sunday monrning worship services.
Worship is the central action of the Church’s life. All else that the church does – both in its life together and in its ministry in the world – is rooted in the worship of God. The vitality of a church’s worship will largely determine the vitality of all other aspects of its life. The Worship Committee of the Session is given the responsibility to help shape the church’s liturgical response to God. Its work is therefore of first importance, and is to be carried out with care and sensitivity.
The Worship Committee shall be responsible for planning and regulating the worship of God in regular and special services of worship, including the musical service. In the accomplishment of this responsibility, the committee shall seek to provide a worship environment that facilitates the action for the worshipers to:
• Join with the community of St. John’s Church in worship to the glory of God
• Strengthen their personal relationship with God
• Respond sensitively to the congregation’s diversity of needs and experiences in worship which are part of God’s gift to St. John’s Church.
This committee shall develop and use forms of worship as guided by the “Directory for Worship” of the Presbyterian church (U.S.A.), recognizing the needs of all ages of the congregation and the relationship of our church’s tradition to changing cultural and religious patterns. The committee shall attempt to increase the active participation of and leadership by lay persons, both youth and adult, in worship services.
The responsibilities of the Worship Committee include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
1. The space where worship is conducted, including its arrangement and furnishings: Flowers, Candles, Banners, Paraments and Objects of Art.
2. The regular Lord’s Day worship services and special worship services such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter and other services as approved by Session.
3. Sacraments and Rites included within the worship service such as Holy Eucharist (Communion and Home Communion), Baptism, ordination and installation of officers, public welcome of new members and with the pastors have the responsibility for weddings and funerals.
4. Supervision of worship service assistants including the regular and special duties of Elders, Deacons, lay leaders, sound system operators, ushers and volunteers attending to attendance, pew racks, etc.
5. Provision of nursery and toddler care during all worship services and children’s worship bags.
6. Development, guided and supported by appropriate church staff, of the music program of the church, including adult and children’s choral music and instrumental music and instruments: piano, organ, hand bells, strings, brasses, etc.
7. Responsible of submitting Worship committee budgets to the Stewardship Committee.
